Google Now Grades Your Landing Page Before Your Ad Shows. Here Is What to Fix.

Google now grades your landing page before your ad shows, with a phone showing a focused landing page and a page grade of A+

If you run Google Ads, your landing page just became a much bigger deal.

In February 2025, Google started grading landing pages before it shows an ad. Not after someone clicks. Before.

If Google thinks your page will frustrate people, it shows your ad less. And when it does show it, you pay more per click.

Here is what changed, what Google looks for now, and how to fix your page without rebuilding your whole website.

What Changed With Google's Landing Page Quality Score

Google Ads gives every keyword a Quality Score from 1 to 10. It is built from three parts: expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience.

Landing page experience has always been part of the score. What changed is the timing.

The old way: someone clicked your ad, didn't like the page, and hit the back button. Over time, Google learned your page was weak.

The new way: Google uses a prediction model to guess how people will feel about your page before your ad runs. Google explained the change in its own announcement. If the guess is bad, your ad gets held back.

Think of it like a food critic who inspects your kitchen before you open the doors. You don't get a chance to win people over first.

What Google Looks For on Your Landing Page Now

Google added three new checks on top of the old ones.

Diagram comparing a landing page that matches its search ad to a cluttered page that does not

1. Does the page match the ad?

If your ad says "Emergency AC Repair," the page should say that near the top. A page that opens with "Welcome to Our Company" is a mismatch. Google treats these as unexpected destinations.

2. Is the page easy to use?

Visitors should find what they came for in seconds. One clear topic. One clear next step. No hunting through menus.

3. Is the business easy to trust?

Your business name, phone number, service area, and reviews should be easy to spot. Hidden details make both Google and customers nervous.

The old checks still count

Speed, mobile friendliness, and content that fits the search all still matter. Google raised the bar. It didn't replace it.

Why a Weak Landing Page Costs You Real Money

Your ad's spot on Google is not just about your bid. Google combines your bid with your quality signals. A better page can win a better spot for less money.

Here is a simple example. These numbers are made up to show how the math works.

Say you spend $5,000 a month and pay $8 per click. That buys about 625 clicks. If a better page drops your cost to $6 per click, the same $5,000 buys about 833 clicks. That is over 200 more people seeing your page. Same budget. No new ads.

It works the other way too. A bad page means fewer clicks, fewer calls, and a higher cost for every job you book.

The Biggest Mistake: Sending Ads to Your Homepage

A busy homepage with many choices next to a focused drain cleaning landing page with one call button

Most businesses send every ad to their homepage. It feels easy. It costs a lot.

Your homepage talks about everything you do. But someone who searched "drain cleaning near me" only cares about drain cleaning. When they land on a page about plumbing, water heaters, remodels, and your company history, they leave.

Google's new model spots this before the ad even runs.

The fix is to build one landing page for each service you advertise. The drain cleaning ad goes to a drain cleaning page. The AC repair ad goes to an AC repair page. Each one is simple, focused, and built to get a call. Our website design team builds pages like this for exactly this reason.

Your 8-Point Landing Page Checklist

8-point landing page checklist for Google Ads

Run every page that gets ad traffic through this list.

  • The main headline matches the ad.
  • Your phone number is at the top and can be tapped on a phone.
  • The main content loads in 2.5 seconds or less.
  • There is one clear action, like "Call Now" or "Get a Free Quote."
  • The page covers one service, not your whole menu.
  • Reviews, years in business, or license info show up without scrolling. Strong reputation management gives you plenty of reviews to show.
  • The form asks only for name, phone, and a short note.
  • No popups or chat boxes cover the page when it loads.

If you answer "no" to any of these, fix the page before you raise your bids. A higher bid on a weak page just means paying more for the same bad result.

How to Check Your Page Speed in 2 Minutes

The three Core Web Vitals speed scores, LCP, INP and CLS, with their targets

Google measures speed with a set of scores called Core Web Vitals. You can check yours for free.

  1. Go to PageSpeed Insights.
  2. Paste in the landing page link from your ad.
  3. Look at the mobile results. Green is good. Yellow needs work. Red is a problem.

Pay the most attention to these three scores:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content shows up. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how fast the page reacts when someone taps. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the page jumps around while it loads. Aim for 0.1 or less.

Slow pages usually come from huge images, too many tracking scripts, or cheap hosting. Fast web hosting fixes a lot of this on its own.

How to Know the Fix Is Working

Give your changes a few weeks. Then watch three numbers in your Google Ads account.

  • Cost per click should go down.
  • Impression share should go up. That means your ad shows more often.
  • Conversion rate should go up. That means more visitors turn into calls.

Then tie those calls to booked jobs. That is how you know the fix paid for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a landing page quality score?

It is how Google rates the page your ad sends people to. It is one of three parts of your Google Ads Quality Score. A better rating usually means cheaper clicks and more people seeing your ad.

What changed in Google's landing page update?

In February 2025, Google started predicting how good your page will be before it shows your ad. Pages that look confusing or don't match the ad get shown less often.

Can I send my Google Ads to my homepage?

You can, but it usually costs more. A homepage covers too many topics. A page built for one service matches the ad better and gets more calls.

How do I check my landing page experience in Google Ads?

Open your keywords view and add the "Landing page exp." column. Each keyword will show Above average, Average, or Below average. Start fixing pages rated Below average first.

How fast should my landing page load?

The main content should show up in 2.5 seconds or less on a phone. You can test it for free with Google's PageSpeed Insights tool.

Does this update affect my SEO rankings?

Not directly. This update is about paid ads. But fast, clear pages also help your organic SEO rankings, so the work pays off twice.
